Pacific Bondi Residence, Sydney
Perched by the water’s edge within an iconic development along Bondi Beach, this apartment’s darkly sophisticated interior scheme provides sheltered respite from the brilliant light and frenzied activity beyond its windows.
Whilst most Australian designers seamlessly merge interiors with the exterior surrounds particularly at ocean-side residences, this pied-à-terre sails a different course. A warm palette informs the apartment’s cocooning entrance foyer with deeply grained Walnut veneers cladding the walls upon which a solid shelf jutts out. In tandem with the large smoked wood-framed mirror above, it introduces depth and a tonal contrast to the soaped ivory-toned European Oak flooring.
Textural links provide an organic flow between rooms. Both the lounge and master bedroom are a continuum of the rich, masculine entrance with their elongated horizontal planes of custom-made Walnut joinery. They include a low standing credenza combining open shelves with drawers and cupboard doors exquisitely finished with solid fluted edging to subtly echo the ocean and rippled grain upon the foyer’s wall surfaces, and an integrated padded Verona leather bedhead with bedside tables. The latter is impeccably finished with a brass built-in bottle receptacle and an inset leather pad matching the customised bedhead’s soothing chocolate tone. In effect, these handcrafted units read more as feature furniture than joinery.
